Phrank Shaibu, the Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, has cautioned supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu against causing disruptions during the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. Shaibu’s warning comes in response to a protest staged by Tinubu’s supporters at the European Union head office in Abuja following the release of the EU Observer Mission report, which exposed credibility issues in the 2023 general elections handled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Expressing concern, Shaibu stated, “We feel compelled to caution the Tinubu administration and its followers against interfering with the tribunal proceedings, especially after their protest at the EU office, which displays their disregard for the truth.” He further recalled previous instances where sponsored protests were organized to intimidate the judiciary during legal proceedings involving Tinubu.

Shaibu also highlighted the deepening poverty and skyrocketing inflation experienced within the first 40 days of Tinubu’s administration. He attributed these hardships to the exploitation of vulnerable Nigerians by the APC, emphasizing the lack of adequate measures accompanying the unplanned removal of petrol subsidies. According to Shaibu, this dire situation allowed for manipulation, whereby individuals could be easily persuaded to participate in protests they had little knowledge about.

Additionally, Shaibu criticized Tinubu for attributing the APC’s failures to scapegoats while failing to acknowledge the role of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He highlighted Tinubu’s contradictory behavior, blaming Godwin Emefiele for economic challenges and ordering his detention while simultaneously praising Buhari, who appointed Emefiele and bestowed him with a national award. Shaibu condemned Tinubu’s refusal to admit the flaws in the 2023 presidential election and his insistence on grandstanding, which has caused frustration among Nigerians.

Concluding his statement, Shaibu urged the judiciary to rectify the injustices imposed by INEC on over 200 million people and emphasized the need for electoral reforms. He called attention to the stark contrast between the genuine victory of MKO Abiola in the historic June 12, 1993 election and Tinubu’s deceptive claims, stating that Tinubu had stolen the hope of a generation. He urged Nigerians to remain patient while awaiting the judicial process.
